Completing Your Estate Plan Sooner Than Later - And Updating It, Too

|

For most people, estate planning is only a legal topic that reaches their mind when there is an immediate need for it. Waiting until the last minute to try to make an estate plan is not the ideal way to handle the situation, though. Instead, you should be thinking about an estate plan sooner than later, as well as ways to update it as the years go by.

Proof in Concept: A Recent Client Story

Our Massachusetts estate planning attorneys recently worked with a married couple that wanted to make an estate plan, only they were already in their mid-50s. They have a new grandchild and the husband lives with a chronic heart condition. If you ask any estate planning lawyer, then they should have had a sound estate plan in place years ago, either when they had children of their own or when the husband was diagnosed with his ailment. Although, better late than never is definitely true in this case.

We met in person with this friendly couple three times but also had multiple phone conversations to hammer out estate planning details and expectations. After all, Percy Law Group, PC is known far and wide for delivering personally tailored legal services for our clients. We wanted to make certain we examined every aspect of their estate plan, answered every question, and acted as a clear guide through what could have been difficult or disheartening issues had we not been there.

In the end, they needed a will, durable power of attorney, healthcare proxy (HCP), estate planning trusts, and an irrevocable life insurance trust. It is a good thing they came to us when they did, as each of these legal tools plays a key part in overcoming obstacles and concerns as they arise later. Without this comprehensive estate plan, the future would be cloudy and uncomfortable. While both clients are happy and relieved the main portion of the process is complete, we will be certain to stay in touch with them as the years go by. Life is a constantly changing experience and estate plans need to grow and adapt with them!
