Child suffers catastrophic injuries, dies in accident

The community of Mansfield, Massachusetts is mourning the loss of a 13-year-old boy who was struck by a school bus. The child suffered catastrophic injuries in the incident and was unable to survive the damage. As the boy's family makes final arrangements, many Mansfield residents are trying to come to terms with the tragic accident and wondering how such an event might have been prevented.

The incident remains under investigation, but police believe that the child was riding his bicycle within or near the marked bike path along a local street at the time of the accident. Witnesses stated that he was riding on the sidewalk when he was struck by a school bus. The collision took place at approximately 2 p.m.

The children who were riding on the bus at the time of the accident were transported to area schools. Grief counselors were on site to provide assistance, and parents were directed to pick up their children at those locations. Grief counselors have also been made available to all area students as they try to understand the ramifications of the accident and process their individual reactions.

No words can express the difficulty that the boy's family faces in the aftermath of this tragic accident and the catastrophic injuries that led to the child's death. Massachusetts police are working to determine the series of events that led up to the accident and to learn whether the driver of the bus was negligent in the matter. Criminal charges could result, and the family of the boy could also seek monetary damages by means of a wrongful death lawsuit in civil court.
