June Is National Safety Month

|

The National Safety Council (NSC) and thousands of other organizations are raising awareness for National Safety Month. This month, all of these foundations want to help people understand and better prepare for how best to keep each other safe at home, at work, and on the road.

The NSC, in particular, separates the month of June into 4 weeks, each week covering a different safety topic. The 1st week’s title is “Stand Up to Falls,” where the NSC hopes to help people become aware of the severe safety issue of slipping and falling. Falls are one of the leading causes of accident-related deaths for people ages 65 and older, and these accidents can be easily prevented with a little caution.

The 2nd week focuses on the dangers of fatigue. Driving while tired can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Not only does fatigue slow down your reaction time, but it can cause people to fall asleep behind the wheel. Nearly 21 preventable deaths happen each day as the result of traffic crashes.

The 3rd week focuses on preparing for active shooters, which is becoming more and more of a problem. According to FBI statistics, from 2000 to 2015, the average number of active shooters rose from 2 to 20. The NSC offers a course that aims to prepare people better to survive such a disaster. More information about this class is available here.

The last week focuses on ergonomics, or the practice of sitting and standing correctly on the job and at home. Each year, thousands of workers are injured by repetitive stress injuries (RSI). RSIs can often be easily prevented by doing a few simple exercises and using equipment designed to put less pressure on the muscles and tendons of the body.
